June 2nd - An Ice Cream Bug

Today we went to another pueblo near Santa Ana. (I am not sure what this one is called.) The culture here, of course, is different from that in the U.S. The most interesting part about all of these pueblos is that we are not supposed to interview the inhabitants without the permission of the President of each pueblo. We also cannot seek him out and must wait for him to notice that we are there. At first this pueblo looked deserted, until a representative from the President came to talk with us. After receiving permission and an announcement being made to the locals, each team quickly had a person to interview. It is charming to see how much these mothers willingly participate in these surveys because of their hope that it will create a better quality of life for their children.

Oaxaca has a plethora of Volkswagon Beetles. This one also happened to be selling ice cream.

Candles in the church. When you have very little you use what you have.

It is impressive to see their dedication to their beliefs.

A curious local.

This was my survey partner, Mandy.

A few fun facts about Mandy. She is a fullbright scholar. She was granted a scholarship to live in Oaxaca to research about rural women, their education, and how that effects their self identity. Mandy lives in Oregon when she is in the U.S. She has also lived in Costa Rica and I'm pretty sure she is one of my kindred spirits.
